Alicia/Maelle tries to hold on to Verso's last canvas, is it to keep the last thread of memories, or to save the fantasy world where she can live the life she wants?
Both endings of the game are well-rounded and have their own charms. [warning of spoilers]
Verso's ending: Big Verso (built with the image of "A man whose memories erased", a wanderer looking for an identity, denying his childhood memories, because he, or all the people in the painting, are just copies of someone). In the end, Big Verso was able to meet and hold hands with Little Verso (the original is the lost son of the Paintress/Aline), as an image implies, he finally accepted a part of his inner child, and was freed. Because after all, the world in Verso's painting is no longer cheerful and innocent, but is overshadowed by Aline's pain and loss. If it continues, it will only be a loop and the boy will not be able to escape.
Maelle's ending: "When you only focus on the lost things, you will only see walls"
I think Maelle's ending is a social ending. In today's society, many people face depression and many problems in life that make them find ways to "escape the present", or "give up on life". But the game does not judge whether your choice is good or bad, but only as a gentle comfort, no matter what, as long as you feel happy with your choice.
Imagine if in real life you were an incompetent person, without beauty and talent, with a guilty conscience and no happiness. But in the world in the picture you created, you have everything, and even the friends you love. So do you choose to stay in the picture even though you know it's just an illusion?
And in the ending Verso, the publisher left a message, "Life is still beautiful". Like the message that the Ghibli movie "The Boy and the Heron" conveyed, life, no matter how difficult, how many bad things, how many losses, there will still be many other people accompanying you on the journey.
